The Lost Great Dane

This evening, while walking JR around the St. Boniface neighborhood, we met a beautiful Harlequin Great Dane. Of course JR wanted to play so we kindly approached him. (I wish I had my camera).

The Great Dane greeted JR with sniffs and furious wagging of his tail. I noticed right away, that the senior couple that this Great Dane was following kept walking. He also didn’t have a tag on his choke collar, which led me to beleive that this was not their Great Dane. I stood there for a few minutes while he and JR played, hoping that his owner was just around the corner. But after a few minutes, I knew that he was lost.  So I decided to take him with me and search for his owner.

I could tell right away that this big guy was friendly and well trained. I held him by his collar as we walked, letting him lead hoping he would smell his way home. We headed east and bumped into a the lady who owns the Min-Pin. She recognize the Great Dane and we both walked towards the park where she had seen him before. There, at the park was his owner who recognizes his dog and called him out. We soon leanred that his name is ‘Blue’. We chatted and his owner talked about how he usually doesn’t just leave. When we parted, he thanked us.

As JR and I headed home, I began to think about the The Great Dane and how gentle and kind he was to me and JR. I knew one day I want to have one. I’ve read a bit about the breed, how they are often called ‘The Gentle Giant’.  Here is a great video of a Great Dane playing with puppies. This truly shows their gentleness.
